Choosing a laboratory equipment calibration service
Calibration confirms that balances, pipettes, thermometers, pressure gauges and dimensional instruments read within tolerance. What you need depends on your quality system and regulators. Confirm the requirements that apply to your lab before you request quotes.
- Accreditation scope. If your quality system requires accredited calibration, ask for the provider's ISO/IEC 17025 certificate and check that its scope covers your instrument types and ranges.
- Traceability. Certificates should state traceability to national standards, such as NIST in the US, and list the reference standards used.
- As-found and as-left data. Ask whether reports include readings before and after adjustment, so you can judge the impact of any out-of-tolerance result.
- Measurement uncertainty. Accredited certificates report uncertainty. Make sure it's small enough for your process tolerances.
- On-site or depot. Decide whether instruments can leave the lab. On-site service reduces downtime, while depot service may cover more ranges.
